The Shock of Night is a novel by Patrick W. Carr that is a part of the Darkwater Saga series. I don't read much fiction, but this book was easy to get into, even though I'm not familiar with the series. This book fits into the fantasy genre, but it seems to have some sci-fi and some spirituality in it as well. What I liked the most about the book was the different points of view. We get two of them in this book, which makes for an interesting read. It's almost necessary, as this book is quite long at 455 pages! I think the last time I read a fiction book this long was when I was reading Stephen King novels 20 years ago. I also liked the character development. You really feel like you know the main character by the time you get to the middle of this novel.
What I didn't like so much was that the book was slow to get going. You really had to keep at it to get through the first 80 or so pages. After the slow start, the story improved a lot.

The novel is part epic, part murder mystery, part theology. It is set in a medieval setting and the main character is a man who was just short of ordination when called to war. Now dealing with serious PTSD ( with a magical kick), and trying to deal with the loss of his priesthood the hero is also trying to solve a murder before a demonic for can destroy the city.
The main character and some of minor characters are well drawn, and the plotting is generally good, but there is a relatively large hole that is not dealt with. Maybe it will be in the next book, but it breaks the story's integrity by not giving a clearer reason for why the Vigil doesn't fulfill its obligations as regards Willet. It is a major plot point and while the resolution might be believable a bit more work needed to be done to get from point a to b. This particular subplot felt rushed at the very end.
The book was generally well edited but there are a few glaring word choice errors mostly regarding commonly confused word pairs, e.g. captive for captor. However, personal pet peeve... If you're going to create an alternative religion, don't use the language of the Primary World's religion in your swearing and praying. Most of the time the author caught it but a couple of times it slipped through. No where in the story is the divine referred to as Lord, except one or two places where we would use the expression "Oh Lord..." as a half-prayer, half-curse of frustration.
There’s something so fun about starting a new series, especially from a trusted author and genre. That’s exactly what this post is about. Patrick W. Carr’s newest series, The Darkwater Saga, has kicked off with all the awesome!
I was a huge fan of Carr’s first series, The Staff and the Sword, so as I mentioned, I couldn’t wait to start this one. I can tell you it has been worth the wait! From the world created, the characters and the plot, I fully enjoyed every aspect.
I really liked our main guy Willet. His story and his whole personality…I loved it! He’s different from a lot of the main characters I come across and I thought Carr did a fabulous job with him. I also really liked Bolt. He’s a secondary character, but trust me, he’s awesome! Plus his name is Bolt.
The story is also intriguing and captivated me. The more I read, the more I got into it. With entertainment, twists and intrigue, this story keeps fantasy fans hooked. By the end, well, I didn’t want it to end and now I cannot wait for the next in the series!
If you’re on the fence about whether or not you want to start this series, there’s a novella to kick off the series, By Divine Right. And guess what? It will cost you zero cents to buy. My kinda book.
What book can’t you wait to start reading?

If there were more stars to be awarded - I would do so! I don't know if I can accurately convey my love for both this series as well as The Staff and the Sword series by Patrick W. Carr? And I also don't know if I can accurately describe the plot in this review, but what I can do is tell you that the world Carr creates in this series is one I felt instantly at home in (the same is true of his previous series) I can't describe it - I just 'know' where I am, how it looks, how it feels, how it smells...even the terms used to describe things that are not what they are called here, just make sense.
I love how the charisms, talents and temperaments - central elements to the plot - are explained and worked out. I love how well-defined and 'alive' the characters are. I love the descriptions of things that are not 'real' - such as delving (the act of being able to see into another due to a particular gift) and how they just make sense.
I can't really explain it - I just feel so connected to this world, these character - and I often find myself struggle to pull myself out of it when I stop reading or listening (I have the books as well as the audio book for The Shock of Night - Danny Campbell is a WONDERFUL narrator and I truly feel he captures the 'spirit' of this book.)
Having gone on and on about how well the world is developed and how authentic the descriptions feel, Patrick W. Carr also doesn't explain everything (that makes perfect sense, right?!) What I mean is, he sometimes gives you the pieces and you, and the character have to put it together, and you don't know if you have drawn the right conclusion until 'something' later on gives you an indication - but I like that, I like having to work a bit and ponder, analyse and chew as I read - it makes me feel like I have been included as a character, rather than a by-stander.
This is the second time I've listened to this book, and my love hasn't changed - if anything, its been rekindled. I highly recommend both of his series!
