I had read the first two books back when they were originally published and wasn't aware that they had been developed into a significant series, so that when I first began to use Amazon to purchase my books, it was great to be able to purchase all the newer works at one time; a risky venture if the writer hadn't been a long time favorite of mine! And I was able to reaquaint myself with the first three books of the Mallory Family 10 volume series. Two of the "generic" features in this series that I liked best included are that there are two generations involved- the elder Mallory brothers aged 35-46 and the younger "cousins" aged 18-30ish. As a member of the elder generation the works about younger heroes and heroines tend to get a bit dull and predictable in their characterization- I mean how many ways can an 18 year old girl or a 23 year old man be portrayed? And the second feature is the support cast which includes the Anderson family [ in later works]. Two of the three works include my favorites- Anthony and James, who separately are entertaining enough but together they make me smile inside. Volume one is the only child of the only Mallory sister who has been raised by all her uncles and finds herself in a compromising situation with one of the younger generation "rakes"- Nicholas Eden, who has his own reasons for refusing to marry. Since both Anthony and James are also notorious for their rakishness, they oppose the match which occurs anyway and the relationship between Nicholas and the two Uncles-in-law adds to the high jinx throughout the additional works. Both Anthony and James are introduced in the first volume.
In volume two is Anthony's story and his Scot's heroine, with its tavern crawling to find the bad guys and the struggles of a mature man who never believed he married and the woman he doesn't want to live without; while all the while James is having a good time observing the antics. This one is tied with No Choice but Seduction for my favorite book.
Volume three starts where volume two lets off in the life of James, the retired "Gentleman" pirate, and introduces the five Anderson Brothers from Bridgeport Connecticut- American Barbarians! James' heroine -is the only sister of the shipping family and the brothers play significant roles in at least 3 or 4 of the subsequent volumes. Into the interplay between nephew-in law Nicholas and Anthony & James, we now have the antagonism of American Barbarians and English tyrants between the Andersons and Anthony & James when "Georgie" is forced to dress in boy's clothing and travel on James' ship as his cabin boy. As with Anthony, James has sworn off marriage and sets in motion the consequences of a forced marriage, with all the trials and turbulance that accompanies it. The dialogue is fun, satirical and aptly applied with those of an older generation, the relationships are consistent in the interplay and the story lines, while always ending on a happy note, create a journey to that destination that keeps the reader engaged.

I love Johanna Lindsey. Had read these many years ago and wanted to read them again. Was happy to see them altogether.
The copy of this book, with this 10-digit ISBN, that I have is a special 3-in-1 edition of the first three Malory books Love Only Once, Tender Rebel and Gentle Rogue.

I won't go into other details on the stories, other than they are great if you're a Lindsey fan, but thought that anyone checking out this book should have this information.
I enjoy all novels which are in the days past and other countries.

I like any book by Johanna Lindsey. The Malory Family is always good reading. They are a very close family, even though they may not see eye to eye all the time. These books draw you into them and you just can't put the book down until you have finished it, then you wanting to start another. I have read some of these books 3 times.
